About Joanna Butler

Better known as Jay, I’m a London SEO and online marketing consultant.

Joanna Butler My main areas of expertise lie in building killer online marketing strategies from a combination of any or all of the following: search engine optimisation (SEO), web analytics, social media and paid search (PPC). I’m also passionate about usability, accessibility and online PR and I adore working for my clients who consist of both large blue chip companies and SMEs. I also love to speak at conferences about my online marketing experiences.

My background consists of over 8 years as a professional website designer and developer programming in (X)HTML, CSS, XSLT, XML, Flash ActionScript, PHP and a little JavaScript, .NET and MySQL. I began teaching myself HTML at just 14 years old, going professional as a freelancer a few years later, and then moved to work in-house within a web development team in the competitive ecommerce sector of mobile phones. This is where I got my first taste of SEO and web analytics as a means to generating targeted traffic to build high performance ecommerce websites, and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Search Engine Journal contributor Since then I have become both a Google Analytics Qualified Individual and a Google AdWords Qualified Individual and explored online marketing further through joining the Chartered Institute of Marketing and gaining a Professional Development in eMarketing Award. I also contribute to other blogs such as Search Engine Journal.

When I’m not satisfying my addiction to the Internet, in my spare time I enjoy exploring London, photography and horse riding when I can.

What is Search Engine Chocolate?

Search Engine Chocolate is my online marketing blog where I explore ideas and topics such as search engine optimisation, website analytics, social media and online marketing strategies. I also like to cover related topics like online reputation management, pay-per-click advertising, accessibility, usability and technology. The idea behind the name is creating content that search engines will love, rather like chocolate! It should go without saying that these thoughts are purely my own and not of my employer.
